Angela made a fabulous job of her little boys first birthday by using one of his favourite books as inspiration. Angela has a real eye for putting together party details. She has come up with gorgeous themed elements for Ryder’s birthday. I love how she has sourced a few key items to pull the whole party together and create a fabulous look. Check out how Angela has used some Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric to create some party centre pieces.

Theme: The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of Ryder’s favourite books so Angela thought it would be a fun theme for his birthday party. There are many children’s books which can become a super theme for parties. I can imagine great parties from Hairy Maclary, The Gruffalo, Pete the Cat, Dr Suess, Fancy Nancy, Peter Rabbit, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt or any Fairy Tale or Nursery Rhyme. Book themes can provide you with easy images and colour schemes to work with and if it is your child’s favourite book then they are going to love all the party details inspired from it.

Invitation: Angela made her own invitations using a free template from De Su Mama. She then used PicMonkey to add her own details. Such cute wording on the invitations and little Ryder looks super adorable. The perfect invitation for a first birthday party.

Decorations: For decorations Angela made bunting from Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric. You can buy this fabric from Fabric Vision or Spotlight. She also made the birthday boy a tie from the fabric and attached it to a white long sleeve t-shirt for Ryder to wear. How gorgeous is the caterpillar made from red and green balloons? Love such quick and easy, yet effective decorating ideas like these. Angela bought a Very Hungry Caterpillar placemat from Acquisitions to use as a backdrop centre piece for her food table.

Party Food: The Very Hungry Caterpillar provides such a fabulous theme for your party food. I especially like how it can focus on some healthy party food choices. Angela said she found the party food easy to organise and prepare as she just did all the types in the book; fruit, cheese, salami, ice-cream, chocolate cake… Love the cute food labels which can be found from Learn with Play at Home.

Cake: Angela made and decorated her own cake. She used fondant in a few shades of green to create a marbled effect for the body of the caterpillar. Angela said she wanted the caterpillar to stand up but it was too heavy so she had to lie it on the cake. This still looks very effective. Ryder must have loved seeing his favourite book character on his cake.

Party games: All the kids made their own caterpillar crown to wear as party hat. You can see Ryder wearing his. Again a simple idea that is so effective. The kids also painted egg carton caterpillars and did caterpillar pictures using felt fabric circles stuck on card. They would have had lots of fun and been busy party guests. Lots of creative goodies to make and take home from this party.

Favors: Angela made these adorable caterpillar pegs using red and green little pom poms. Older kids would enjoy helping make a favor like this. She used the pegs to clip onto a little cellophane bag of red and green pebbles. Little cellophane bags, craft items like pom poms and plain pegs can be found at most ‘$2 shops’. Party guests also took home lollypops with thank-you stickers and cupcakes decorated with caterpillars made out of  pebbles.

Angela is a busy mum to three beautiful children. I think kids parties might be her second calling! Her first calling is hairdressing. Angela runs her own hairdressing business ‘Hair Now’ from her lovely, professional home salon in Mariehau, Christchurch. Thank you Angela and Ryder for sharing this amazing party with us. I think we may see some more of Angela’s parties in the future…
